The Willamette High School Jazz Band 1 has claimed the OMEA State Jazz Championship, compiling the best score of any band in any division in Oregon.
Senior Ryan Helms was selected as the outstanding high school jazz saxophonist for the state.
This is arguably the best overall jazz band in school history, finishing undefeated with wins at the Wildish Jazz Festival, Oregon Jazz Festival, District 12 Jazz Festival, Pleasant Hill Jazz Festival, NW Jazz Festival, and OMEA State Championship.
In addition, 11 Willamette Jazz Band 1 members were selected by audition to perform with the Oregon All-Stars Big Band and New York Trombonist Alan Ferber at the 2019 Oregon Jazz Festival.
Congratulations to the band and teacher Joe Freuen.
Tannica Porter has made school history. The Willamette junior has been an age-group golfing star on the rise, and now she’s the school’s first-ever state champion.
Porter has claimed the 5A State Golf Championship, coming from behind to win the title by one stroke.
High stakes tournaments are nothing new for Porter; her summer schedule tells the story.
June features the Pacific Northwest Junior PGA Championship in Tacoma, the Peter Jacobsen Junior Challenge in Corvallis, and the Oregon Junior Amateur in Lake Oswego.
July includes the U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur Qualifier, followed by the Oregon Junior Stroke Play in Woodburn, and Central Willamette Junior tourneys in Molalla and Prineville.
For the moment, Tannica can enjoy the state title and her place in the school record books.
